JOB DESCRIPTION: TRAVELING SUPERINTENDENT


Summary:


To provide on-site coordination for all phases of construction projects, including coordinating subcontractors, material and equipment, ensuring that drawings, specifications and contract documents are being strictly followed, and work is proceeding on schedule and within budget. Superintendent shall be responsible for scheduling, inspections, quality control, and job site safety.

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities of Superintendent:


  • Provide direction to and resolve coordination issues amongst numerous subcontractors and vendors;
  • Perform quality control duties and responsibilities regarding the work being performed;
  • Communicate with project team regarding ASI’s, RFI’s, material submittals and shop drawings;
  • Ensure that each subcontractor is fully executing and complying with its contracted scope of work;
  • Coordinate required inspections with local jurisdictions or other relevant entities;
  • Monitor and enforce jobsite safety rules and guidelines;
  • Identify subcontractor non-compliance with safety, health, and environmental quality standards;
  • Identify conflicts in construction progress and communicate them to project team for resolution;
  • Maintain daily log of activities on the jobsite;
  • Ensure subcontractor has promptly corrected all deficiencies identified by project team;
  • Issue notices of non-compliance to subcontractors in regards to quality of work or scheduling;
  • Ensure that the job site is always kept in a clean and organized manner;
  • Perform job progress and completion punch list identification and completion;
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant pandemic safety protocol.



Secondary Functions:


  • Identify areas of work that are outside of subcontracted scope.
  • Open the jobsite at beginning of the day and secure the jobsite at the end of the day.


Job Scope:


This role will require regular interaction and communication with personnel. Daily tasks will vary, but will include those listed as “Essential Functions” above. The Project Superintendent does not have authorization to engage in monetary agreements (subcontracts, change orders, work authorizations). All request for monetary agreements must be communicated to Project Manager for consideration prior to work performed. 


Supervisory Responsibility:


Superintendent shall supervise all foreman, subcontractors, consultants, and vendors on a daily basis. This supervision shall ensure adequate manpower is available for each task and compliant work performed. Superintendent shall supervise all Assistant Superintendents, as applicable.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Experience in and strong familiarity with all major trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and others.
  • Ability to communicate using the following tools: telephone, written logs, email, computer, digital camera.
  • Ability to read and understand construction plans and specifications
  • Endurance and ability to survey entire job site, including stairs or other elevated structures.

  • This position involves work at a construction site where duties will be performed both indoors and outdoors.
  • Requires travel to and from jobsites and jobsite walk-throughs or pre-bid meetings; may require staying away from home for long periods;
  • Weekend and off hours work may be required to meet project deadlines;
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers needed to operate tools, a computer keyboard, mouse and other business machines;
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk;
  • Use hands to finger, handle, or feel;
  • Reach with hands and arms;
  • Climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and
  • Speak and hear;
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit;
  • Significant standing, walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, kneeling, crawling, reaching, handling, pushing, and pulling. 
  • Ability to lift up to 100 lbs. 

Other Qualifications:


  • Must be able to travel to the jobsite(s) as assigned;
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and verifiable, acceptable driving record;
  • OSHA 30 preferred; must be willing to obtain OSHA 30 upon hire if not already certified;
  • Must be subject to criminal and government background checks required for public work.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee may be occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock and risk of vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.


Reporting Structure:  Will report directly to the Director of Construction.


Job Types/Location: 


  • Work for this full-time position will take place on job site locations that may be located throughout the Eastern region of the U.S., generally along the East Coast; 
  • Company will coordinate housing and transportation needs for this employee at job sites located more than one hour from employee’s place of residence;
  • Company will supply all tools needed;
  • Position not eligible for remote work/teleworking, though meetings will be held remotely to the extent possible during the COVID-19 pandemic.
