Civil/Structural Design Engineer
Overview:
A leading contractor specializing in heavy civil construction and underground mine development is seeking a Civil/Structural Design Engineer to join its team in Evansville. Known for delivering complex infrastructure projects such as deep shafts, tunnels, and hoisting systems, the firm provides full design-build services across North America.
Notable projects span across major tunneling and pipeline efforts in Los Angeles, New York, Virginia, British Columbia, and West Virginia.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Civil/Structural Design Engineer will play a key role within a multi-disciplinary engineering group, supporting mining, civil infrastructure, and custom hoisting system projects. The position involves both design and construction support, with work ranging from detailed plan development to field interaction and fabrication coordination.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design structural systems, components, and modifications for heavy civil and mining applications
- Support planning and cost estimation for structural systems
- Respond to field requests and provide technical recommendations
- Prepare engineering documents including calculations, reports, drawings, and specifications
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and best practices
- Collaborate with engineers, vendors, and clients
- Occasional travel to project sites
Background Profile:
- B.S. or M.S. in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- 3–10 years of experience, ideally in underground construction, mining, or structural design
- PE license or ability to obtain within two years
- Proficient in steel and reinforced concrete design
- Experience with geotechnical/SOE design is a plus
- Skilled in structural analysis (software + hand calcs)
- Familiarity with Autodesk Inventor and finite element analysis is advantageous
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
- Proficiency in Excel, Word, and other engineering-related software
